Peter Gleick, Climate Hero! Exposes illegal activities of the Heartland Institute

More Light Shed On Origin And Veracity Of Heartland Documents

by Christine, 350OrBust.wordpress.com, February 20, 2012
Dr. Peter Gleick is the co-founder and president of the Pacific Institute in Oakland, California. His bio states that he is a hydroclimatologist by training, with a B.S. from Yale University and an M.S. and Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley from the Energy and Resources Group. His research and writing address the critical connections between water and human health, the hydrological impacts of climate change, sustainable water use, privatization and globalization, and international conflicts over water resources. Dr. Gleick is an internationally recognized water expert and was named a MacArthur Fellow in October 2003 for his work. In 2001, Gleick was dubbed a “visionary on the environment” by the British Broadcasting Corporation and in 2006 he was elected to the National Academy of Sciences, Washington, D.C.
Earlier today, a statement from Dr. Gleick was published in the Huffington Post:
Since the release in mid-February of a series of documents related to the internal strategy of the Heartland Institute to cast doubt on climate science, there has been extensive speculation about the origin of the documents and intense discussion about what they reveal. Given the need for reliance on facts in the public climate debate, I am issuing the following statement.
At the beginning of 2012, I received an anonymous document in the mail describing what appeared to be details of the Heartland Institute’s climate program strategy. It contained information about their funders and the Institute’s apparent efforts to muddy public understanding about climate science and policy. I do not know the source of that original document but assumed it was sent to me because of my past exchanges with Heartland and because I was named in it.

This is my response to Dr. Gleick’s revelation, a little late for Valentine’s Day but heartfelt all the same:
Dear Dr. Gleick,
Thank you from the bottom of my heart for making a difficult decision,
and risking your reputation in order to give our children a better chance at a sustainable future.
Gratefully,
A mom who loves her children
& thinks all our children deserve clean air, clean water, and a stable climate

Peter Gleick is standing up for the nobility of science. He deserves support for doing so. It is the abject failure of many too many scientists to stand up for what they believe to be real and true about the global predicament facing humankind that is unacceptable and pernicious. The silence of so many scientists has allowed the ideological idiocy Peter has exposed to triumph over science for way too long. At this moment, I want to salute Peter Gleick. That scientists follow his example is long overdue. Peter, thanks for standing up and speaking out so loudly and clearly.

Sincerely,

Steve Salmony
