Houston, TX — Activists will stage a sit-in and a protest in Houston at the TransCanada headquarters on Monday in opposition to the Keystone XL pipeline. TransCanada is the foreign oil company seeking to build the controversial pipeline through American soil to export tar sands oil to China. The sit-in is the third civil disobedience action organized by CREDO, Rainforest Action Network and the Other 98% to maintain pressure on President Obama and the State Department to reject Keystone XL once and for all.
Recent news reports revealed that Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper urged President Obama in a letter to approve the pipeline, offering “joint action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions” if that is what is required to win the project’s approval.
What: Sit-in and protest at Market Square Park / TransCanada Headquarters to stop the Keystone XL pipeline

Who: One hundred people expected at Monday’s event, including many who will risk arrest
When:  9 am CT on Monday, September 16
Protesters will begin marching at 9 am from Market Square Park and will promptly sit-in at TransCanada Headquarters at 9:15 am
Where: Market Square Park and TransCanada Headquarters
Beginning at 301 Milam St. and ending at 717 Texas St. in Houston, TX 77002

Visuals: Activists will hold signs and stage a sit-in at the TransCanada office. Across from the sit-in, protesters will gather to rally in support of those risking arrest.
The State Department is currently investigating the contractor that drafted the latest controversial environmental analysis of the pipeline for failing to disclose ties with TransCanada, and with the powerful oil lobby, the American Petroleum Institute.
More than 75,000 people have signed a Pledge of Resistance to risk arrest in peaceful, dignified civil disobedience if President Obama’s administration issues a draft National Interest Determination recommending approval of the Keystone XL pipeline.
