National Overview: Temperature Highlights For the contiguous United States, the average temperature for January was 31.2°F (-0.4°C), which was 0.4°F (0.2°C) above the 20th century mean and ranked as the 59th warmest January on record, based on preliminary data. On the regional level, the West experienced much warmer than normal temperatures during January while the Northeast, Central, and East North Central regions experienced below normal temperatures.
