Even if we stopped burning fossil fuels today, we have committed to a total temperature increase over pre-industrial ranging from 1.5 C to 3 C. While the climate disasters resulting from these temperature levels are extremely serious, there is no evidence that these temperatures can be stabilized, except with extreme global measures and sacrifices. These temperature estimates do not include the many positive feedbacks that we see occurring now, which means temperature increases at this level and the feedback mechanisms will go into self-sustaining mode. To avoid these increases, we would need to stop burning fossil fuels immediately, reforest as fast as possible, and probably have to do some geoengineering to quench the self-sustaining mechanisms. We would have to adopt what Kevin Anderson has called 'planned austerity'; i.e., global depression. Try selling that in a Presidential debate!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
