Global Temperatures Soaring: 2015 starts off the top of the chart & El Niño is just warming up

NASA Global Annual Temperature record. The first 5 months of 2015 blows the top of the chart. The star shows how much 2015 will break the annual record if the temperature departures for the rest of 2015 are the same as the departure from normal for January through the end of May.
2014 was the warmest year in global climate records but 2015 is on track to be significantly warmer than 2014. The first 5 months were the warmest on record and global models are predicting a super El Niño that could be the strongest ever measured on record or by paleoclimate proxies. Australia's Bureau of Meteorology just released a stunning compilation of forecasts from a range of global models.  The consensus of models forecasts that this will be a super El Niño with water temperatures in the equatorial central Pacific of greater than 4.5 °F (2.5 °C) above normal. NOAA's CFS model forecasts that abnormally warm waters will spread across the Southern Hemisphere. Moreover, the deep mass of much warmer than normal water in the Gulf of Alaska dubbed "the blob" will expand to cover the whole far north Pacific. Exceptionally warm water off of the coast of New England will continue to affect east coast weather. Extraordinarily warm global sea surface temperatures forecast for this summer and fall will bring on even hotter temperatures in the second half of 2015 than the first half. If the models are correct 2015 temperatures will spike far above 2014.
The National Weather Service, NOAA CFS model predicts that global sea surface temperatures will be far above normal this fall. NASA is also predicting a super El Niño with exceptionally warm water in the equatorial Pacific.

Climate scientists have been known for years what's causing the climate to warm - huge human emissions of greenhouse gases. This graph from the IPCC report in 2007 shows the stunning increases in the top 3 greenhouse gases caused by human activities.
Human activities have caused atmospheric greenhouse gas levels to skyrocket.

Recent research has found that weather is becoming more extreme as the climate warms. Climate scientists have repeatedly warned that droughts would get more severe in the western U.S. and that the extreme droughts could be followed by floods in super El Niño years. That is exactly what is happening now as tropical storm Bill brings another round of flooding to Texas and Oklahoma.

Despite the devastation that climate change is already causing there remains a callous group of cowards called Republican "leaders" that refuses to lead on climate. Perhaps the most feckless is Jeb Bush who plays the fool for Koch Industries while Miami slowly drowns. If the man had one ounce of courage, one drop of human decency, one scintilla of intelligence he would fight to save Florida's coastline and its way of life. He would fight for the people he once governed. Jeb is such a tool of the Kochs that he whined when the Pope showed leadership on climate. The Pope is a leader. Jeb is a chump.
"The climate is changing, whether men are doing it or not," Bush said, further calling for “policies of adaptation” to prep for its harmful consequences across the country.
Bush also drew applause when he said he remained "a little skeptical" about taking advice on issues like climate change from Pope Francis, who is expected to call for urgent action on climate change, which the pontiff describes as mostly man-made.
Bush, who converted to Catholicism 20 years ago, told town hall attendees that Francis is an "extraordinary leader" and "really cool," but that "religion ought to be about making us better as a people and less about things that end up getting into the political realm."
Florida is underlain by limestone which is full of holes. Buried channels, caverns and deep holes connect coastal Florida's waters to the ocean. There is no adaptation that can stop the rising seas around Miami. As temperatures warm, ice melts and sea level rises Miami and coastal Florida will drown. There's no way to plug the holes in the limestone.
A politician who would let the largest city in his state drown because he is afraid of the Koch brothers is unfit to be governor. It's frightening to imagine such a spineless coward becoming president.
